Brother Thomas Akin, #470

Oct 4, 2022 | In Memoriam

Thomas Lynn Akin, 73, of Austin, Texas passed away Monday, July 11, 2022.

A life long Austinite, Tom “Tommy” Akin was born February 4, 1949 to Samuel and Louise (nee Jones) Akin. A Master Electrician by profession, Tommy was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He spent many years with Crouch Electric, Motorola, and ended his career leading a crew at the University of Texas at Austin.  Tommy was also a lifelong learner and could often be found reading such tomes as the World Encyclopedia or the Time Life Books WWII collection.  He loved golf, caring for his backyard oasis and his Harley Davidson motorcycle. Tommy never met an animal he couldn’t befriend, and as the self-proclaimed “Good Humor Man,” he loved to make people laugh, especially himself and had many, many catchphrases.

Tommy is preceded in death by his beloved mother, Louise Collins, his stepfather, Allen Collins,  his father, Sam Akin, his brother, Sammy Akin, and his niece, Lezlie Jones.   He leaves behind his partner, Tammy Guthrie of Driftwood; his daughters, Sarah (Darren) Grissom of Leander and Laura (Josh) Whitfield of Hutto; grandchildren, Grace, Libby, & Luke; sister, Sandra (Frank) Miller, and many additional friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Kidney Foundation or Austin Animal Center in Tom’s honor.

A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s on the Lake Episcopal Church on Saturday, October 15, at 2:00 pm, with a reception to follow. /obituary/
