Feb 13, 2023 | Recent News

Hello Brothers and Sisters,

First of all I would like to thank you all for the outstanding performance our workforce displayed on and off the job site. We are stronger when we stand together! The reason I am writing this email is to introduce the new Foreman Development Series. Our local has invested a considerable amount of resources to be able to offer this class to our membership.

What is the foreman development series? Are you working for a foreman that may not be the tip of the spear? Have you considered what it would take to take a step up into management? The FDS was specifically designed to give the tools and confidence needed for the demanding role of frontline foreman. It is a group of (16) 3-hour modules designed to improve the quality of electrical Foremen working in our industry. The first 12 modules in this series are designed as basic training to assist any Journeyman or a beginning Foreman in the development of the skills necessary to succeed in the role of Foreman.

The last 4 are more advanced modules. These modules encourage a lively exchange of ideas between participants with active participation and group activities throughout each class. 1st year apprentices, CW/CEs, JWs, Foremen with 20+ years of experience as well as Company owners and their management staff have completed these classes and found them to be very worthwhile. It is the interaction and sharing experiences between the students, both young and old, that really make the classes so beneficial.

The Foreman Development Series is designed to provide a broad overview of practical, hands-on fundamentals. If you work in the industry long enough, you will find that most Foremen run into the same problems from job to job and come up with similar solutions. These classes are based on current industry “Best Practices”; not any particular management style or IBEW or NECA point of view. The goal of this series is to provide additional tools for the Foreman to use that will compliment both their own skills as an electrician and their company’s policies. Things a student learns in these classes will have practical applications the very next day on the jobsite.

This series of classes is sponsored by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Worker’s 7th District, which covers 5 states; New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. These Modules were created in 2009 by a committee of 9 people with extensive experience in the electrical industry, both running electrical construction projects and in training and teaching electrical skills. In order to ensure the quality of the FDS program all of the trainers teaching these FDS classes are required to be certified by the 7th District.

The Modules if FDS consist of ; The Role of the Foreman, Project Start-Up, Material Management, Labor Relations, Understanding the Estimate, Man Loading & Scheduling, Managing Production, Safety, Communication, Documentation, Change Management, Project Closeout, Understanding the Estimate Part II, Specifications, Highly Effective Foreman Part I, Highly Effective Foreman Part II.
IBEW 520 foresees a monumental opportunity for electrical work growth in the Austin Region. Not only are we going to need to increase our membership, we are also going to need to grow our frontline management. As a local we believe in growing our management from within our membership.

This course is a serious commitment with serious results. This an opportunity for you to be the foreman you would want to work under! This series will begin in late February or early March and two modules will be taught every other Saturday. We need you to sign up so that we can design the class structures to fit our needs. Join your brothers and sisters whom have already signed up and ensure that IBEW 520 has the best trained, and most efficient workforce available.
